An old and very wise headteacher I had was taking our French lesson. He was encouraging us to think about the origin of words, and how words from one language find their way into another. He used the example of the French 'jour' meaning 'day'. In English a journey was a distance that could be travelled in a day. There is great wisdom in knowing how far we can journey in a day, without exhausting ourselves by pushing on further than we are able. To give ourselves time set up camp before nightfall so we can rest.
